Interview with Prof. Robert Osamura, Sanno Hospital, Tokyo (Japan), on recent developments in cytopathology.
With gene-specific targeted cancer therapies the task for the pathologist has increased from the morphologic diagnosis to the genetic information that is needed for a personalized treatment. Prof. Osamura, currently President of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC), points to the implications for the hospital’s lab equipment: “Clinicians and patients appreciate the rapid report whether there is a certain mutation or not. That’s why we recommend to test for certain genetic changes inhouse in order to expedite the report.”
